American Standard Code for Information Interchange
   Abbreviated ASCII, pronounced "[as-kee]." A standard coding scheme that assigns numeric values to letters, numbers, punctuation characters, and control characters to achieve compatibility among different computers and peripheral devices. In ASCII, each character is represented by a unique integer value in the range 0 through 255.
